ACTIVE SERVICE STATIONBritish Columbia
CHALLENGE: A former service station with a long operational history was found to have contaminated the subsurface with petroleum hydrocarbons. The service station is located adjacent a mixed residential/park area near a sensitive park environment. SOLUTION: Based on an assessment of site conditions, Morrow evaluated feasible remedial options to control further off-site migration of free phase and dissolved hydrocarbons as well as to recover free phase hydrocarbons. Daily fluctuations in water table elevation in response to tides required a remedial system capable of working in a dynamic environment. Following pilot testing, a recovery system consisting of bioslurping equipment, liquid treatment via a portable hydrocarbon water separator and low profile tray type air stripper prior to a permitted sanitary sewer discharge was commissioned. Vapour discharges are treated through a biofilter consisting of compost media acclimated to biodegrading hydrocarbons. Performance of the biofilter media was optimized through humidifcation and temperature control. |
