REMEDIAL EXCAVATION FORMER SERVICE STATION

Victoria, BC

CHALLENGE: The excavation of hydrocarbon contamination beneath a major highway was required to occur with minimal inconvenience to the public.

SOLUTION: Soil and groundwater sampling defined the extent of the contamination. Geophysics was used to map the bedrock profile to develop an excavation plan. Groundwater modelling using MODFLOW estimated dewatering requirements for the excavation and sized the water treatment equipment. An aggressive strategy for remedial excavation was designed to remove all soil and groundwater contamination. The strategy considered: public safety; degree and length of disruption to the highway; geotechnical concerns; and included municipal and public input. The Morrow strategy required complete closure of all lanes of the major thoroughfare to traffic. Careful planning and execution of the strategy allowed the successful early completion of the off-site excavation. The success of the project was lauded by both the municipality and surrounding residents. BC Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection issued a Certificate of Compliance for the remediation.
