TECK COMINCO METALS LTD.

Kimberly, BC

CHALLENGE: Teck Cominco Metals Ltd. (Teck Cominco) operated the Sullivan Mine (lead/zinc), southeast of Kimberley BC, from 1910 to 2001. Regulatory officials required Teck Cominco to assess and remediate all site areas following closure of the site. Concentrations of water (groundwater, surface water) and in some areas soil, were found to exceed regulatory standards under post closure conditions.

SOLUTION: Morrow recommended a human health and ecological risk assessment (HH/EcoRA) to evaluate post closure conditions and determine if additional measures are required to reduce risk. As a necessary component of the risk assessment, we have undertaken detailed hydrogeological and geochemical modelling to estimate current and future contaminant loadings to the receiving environment. The HH/EcoRA is the first of its kind at a mine site in BC, and is being scrutinized and reviewed by several levels of government, as well as public stakeholder groups. Morrow has developed a team of knowledgeable technical experts to complete only necessary work in meeting corporate and regulatory objectives.
