Brown Field

BROWNFIELD REDEVELOPMENT

Southeast False Creek, Vancouver, BC

CHALLENGE: Over a number of years, the City of Vancouver has acquired the former industrial lands located on the south shore of False Creek. These industrial lands, encompassing about 20 ha, have been home to ship yards, metal fabricators, sawmills, metal plating operations, a waste incinerator and the City of Vancouver Works Yard. Much of the lands are composed of fill of unknown origin. The City of Vancouver intends to redevelop these lands for mixed parkland, commercial and residential use.

SOLUTION: Morrow has conducted a series of subsurface investigations utilizing borehole drilling and geophysical techniques to understand the distribution of the fill materials and characterize the extent of contaminated soil and groundwater beneath the site. A combination of risk management and risk assessment has occurred at the site. The soil and groundwater characterization was used to complete a human health and ecological risk assessment to support a remedial action plan comprising a combination of source removal and on-site management of contaminated soil and groundwater to, in part, protect the marine environment of nearby False Creek.
