Preliminary & Detailed Site Investigation
Preliminary Site Investigation (PSI)
The objective of a Preliminary Site Investigation is to indicate the potential existence of contaminants or environmental concerns on the property, to comment on associated environmental liabilities, or to establish a baseline of environmental conditions. The PSI forms the basis of any further investigations of the property. A PSI must include:
- a walk-over inspection of the site
- a written report documenting the findings
- air photo analysis
- archival record review
- interviews with persons knowledgeable of activities at the site
- assessment of purchasing documents and waste manifests
- determination of areas of potential environmental concern and potential contaminants of concern.
Detailed Site Investigation (DSI)
If a PSI indicates the potential for contamination associated with the site and/or surrounding properties, a DSI is completed to confirm or refute the potential for contamination and to define the spatial extent of the contamination. The DSI is designed on a site-by-site basis and may include:
- soil sample collection and analysis
- soil gas survey
- drilling of boreholes and installation of groundwater monitoring wells
- test pitting to assess soil quality at intermediate depth
- geophysical testing (e.g., electro-magnetic surveys) to evaluate subsurface conditions and/or to identify buried structures or contaminant plumes
- surface water sample collection
- groundwater sampling
- hydrogeologic interpretation
